 fotolia 5883084Dear Sir or Madam,

I am presenting to you fundamental information regarding the Centre of Auditory Attention Training using the Tomatis’ Method, as well as the method itself. This method is fully based on medical research and it is recommended by doctors (Prof. Służewski from Poznań and Prof. Skarżyński from Warsaw). We also cooperate with the Psychology Institute of the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, and we run placements for students with regard to Prof. Tomatis’ method. The method is used in 300 centers around the world all of which hold a license for using it. The Poznań Centre of Auditory Attention Training using the Tomatis’ Method is one of such institutions. It has a medical nature and uses licensed Proteac equipment.

We are supporting your child’s development. We run auditory attention trainings using the Tomatis’ method. The therapy and program are selected individually. The development of the intellectual abilities of your children is possible thanks to the improvement of their auditory attention. The program is scheduled individually to strengthen the reception of those frequency bands which are responsible for the development of communication and ‘listening with understanding’ skills. The training has an impact on: broadening the vocabulary, expression fluency, eloquence, communication skills as well as learning foreign languages (also in cases of multilingualism it has a large impact on the accent, proper pronunciation and spontaneous understanding). It is crucial in dealing with learning difficulties.

Among those who used the Tomatis’ auditory attention training there are Gerard Depardieu, Romy Schneider and Maria Callas.

It has to be stressed that the effects of using this method are permanent.

A few words about the way in which the mechanism of auditory attention works:

The human ear plays an extremely significant role in the learning process. Due to the interrelationship between the language, memory, concentration and understanding, the ear has an impact on acquiring the abilities to write and read. It is also responsible for the body posture, physical coordination and very often for emotional states. It also has the function of charging the cerebral cortex, as sounds constitute around 60% of the energy delivered to the brain.

In the 1950-ties a French otolaryngologist and neurologist Prof. Alfred Tomatis proved that the human ear is not only an auditory organ. It also ‘energizes’ the cerebral cortex. The results of his research have shown that high-frequency tones improve the activity of the mind and low-frequency ones work quite opposite as they often cause tiredness. According to Toamtis, the brain is ‘energized’ stronger by high tones, such as Gregorian chants or the compositions of Mozart. During the training we listen to ‘specific’, appropriately filtered sounds (within the frequencies which are disturbed or those which are responsible for the speech centre and, what follows, are connected to a given foreign language or proper communication in the mother tongue).

The auditory attention training is aimed for practicing the ability to listen in an effective and organized way. The exercises stimulate the central nerve centre, delivering through the ear to the brain the energy necessary to function efficiently.

Ear training supports the assimilation and integration of foreign languages, significantly broadening (according to research from 30% up) the effectiveness of learning these languages, as well as improving communication skills.

Training concentration using the Tomatis’ method results also in psychological benefits: higher self-confidence, energy, motivation, clarity of the mind and general physical and mental state.

The ear, due to its structure, manages the body, controlling it through the sense of balance.

After the ear training one can notice the improvement of physical coordination, spatial imagination and better control of muscle tension which results in better physical fitness.

Research has proven that, apart from the improvement of the concentration of auditory attention, the training has a positive impact on other levels: the increase of the IQ level, better reading skills, visual perception, overall intellectual and communication skills, abilities to put thoughts and emotions into words and better social adaptation.

The Tomatis’ method has also a positive impact on vocal emission.

The positive impact of music (used in the Tomatis’ training with suitable filtration – the individualization of the program) on the physical and mental state was known for years and it was called in the late 20th century ‘the Mozart Effect’. Not all scholars are convinced by the explanations that this type of music is a stimulus increasing the flow of nerve impulses, but they all agree: ‘Mozart works!’ It supports creativity, harmonizes the action of the heart, improves the memory, and removes stress.

It helps in problems with concentration, learning difficulties, dyslexia, stuttering, speech and understanding disorders, over sensitivity and hyperactivity.

The Method of Auditory Attention Training.

According to Prof. Tomatis, the main function of the ear is not hearing, but listening. He makes a very clear distinction between these two: hearing is by nature a passive activity, while listening requires involvement and activeness. The ability to listen includes also the skill to assimilate information as well as their proper filtering. Efficient processing of sensory data eliminates redundant stimuli, which makes concentration possible without the impression of accumulation of information. The trainings of auditory attention in the form devised by Tomatis have the goal of training and improving the ability to listen in an effective and organized way.

The training is based on listening to suitably chosen sound material, which is played through a device called the ‘electronic ear’, which is a perfect model of a human ear. The stimulation is carried out through sounds with a specified, high or low frequency. These sounds are appropriately filtered and gated. During the training, which consists of couple of stages, the individually chosen sound material reaches the patient by air and by bone structure. During the session one can talk, play board games, solve puzzles, play with others or sleep. The whole training is built of couple of stages, from very intensive sound stimulation initiating the therapy – to active involvement of the patient.

Stage I – 30 hours of exercises divided into the period of 15days, two hours a day.

Stage II – 15 hours of exercises which take place after a 1-2 month break. This stage, unlike the previous one, is concentrated on the pressure of working with the microphone, so that the patient has the opportunity to listen to his or her own voice and work with it.

The auditory attention training is preceded by an attention of auditory lateralization test. It is a test carried out using an audiometer which helps to determine the level of the auditory attention of the leading ear. During this test – in the case of children – an interview with the parents is also carried out. It concerns the course of pregnancy, the child’s development during the first year of life and the following years as well as information about the child’s medical record.

The course and the cost of the listening training Tomatis method in our Center in Poznan:

  • Consultation goes before the listening training. It consists in interview with child’s parents and also test of listening abilities and laterality test is made. The cost of this consultation – 130 zł.

  • Each period of listening is followed by a pause of several weeks while the next tests are required. They cost 100 zł.

  • Parent of the child who accompanies him in the therapy may listen to the program for free while the first period of therapy.

Training consist in listening special music contents by an Electronic Ear, which is very similar to human ear. The stimulation is held by sounds of adequate, high frequency. This sounds are suitable filtered . During training, which consist in several periods, specific program is select for every individual, and it is send to patient by bones and air way. During session patients can talk, play games or sleep. Training is made up of several periods from sound impeling which entering therapy to patient’s active taking part.

First period – 30 hours sessions in 15 days (2 hours each day).

Second period – 15 hours sessions after a pause of several weeks. This period focus on work with microphone, which is a novelty in comparison with the first period. It allows patients to listen their own voice and work with them.

The listening training is followed by laterality test. The audiometer allows to define degree of hearing attention and predominant ear. During test – in case of children – an interview with parents is carried out. It relates to a course of pregnancy, development of child in its first year of life and nexts and overcame illness.

Learning Foreign Languages:

Constant listening to ourselves and people around us results in the best recognition of the frequency of our native language.

We may say that we are deaf to the frequencies of other languages and as we cannot hear sounds we do not know and we are not able to produce them properly. Using appropriate sound material during the auditory attention training we affect our ability to acquire foreign languages. Beginning the training along with the start of learning a foreign language makes acquiring that language easier and using the auditory attention training method during the period of learning of the language allows us to develop fluency and accent.

Below one may find a chart showing the frequencies characteristic for given languages

The effects of using the method in learning foreign languages

  • Faster acquisition of foreign languages – shorter time of learning

  • Extended active vocabulary

  • Better accent

  • Better spontaneous understanding

  • Larger sensitivity to language nuances

  • Development of fluency

  • Faster and more permanent memory

Dyslexia is an auditory attention disorder of sound integration and analysis. The malfunction of auditory attention and a blockade on the ear level has a direct impact on the listening process. Moreover, this results in learning difficulties. The, so called, ear lateralization, i.e. the dominant ear, plays a crucial role in the listening process. The long process of analysis of the heard content and the specialization of hemispheres has an impact on the pace of the child’s work. The left hemisphere directly receives information and analyses them, whereas the right hemisphere on one hand controls if this process has been carried out properly and on the other – it triggers creativity. Both hemispheres accomplish their tasks and receive information at the same time. One needs to remember that the right ear is dominant in the listening process. If he left ear becomes dominant the whole system is disrupted. In such cases the information reaches us with delay. The time of control is prolonged and it is more complicated. The time of reaction may be 100 or even 200 times longer than normally. When children with dyslexia are concerned, the blockade of analyzing sounds of some frequencies results in difficulties in distinguishing such consonant pairs as ‘k’ and ‘g’ or ‘p’ and ‘b’. In such cases the child has more problems with these phonemes and sometimes hears them interchangeably. The differences between some phonemes are minimal; therefore, their analysis has to be very well practiced. Also writing requires high motor skills from the child, along with mastering micro-moves. Reading and writing requires connecting the graphic sign with the sound in a short period of time. If the sounds are not clearly distinguished this becomes very hard or even impossible for the child.

The aim of ear training is improving the auditory attention, shortening the time of analysis and exercising the right ear which leads to its domination. Dyslexia does not only concern reading and writing difficulties. It is connected with the malfunctioning of the whole mechanism of learning, especially learning the rules of orthography. In such cases the child tries to cope with problem by additional effort and work which leads to exhaustion and difficulties with concentration. Sooner or later, the child gives up as the amount of hard work does not bring expected effects. Such a child very often has the impression of an acoustic curtain: it has the feeling as if someone has placed a soundproof glass which distorts sounds between him and the teacher. The child and the teacher do not perceive in the same way and the cause of this is simple – they do not hear the same things!

In today’s world stress is an inseparable part of our lives: it accompanies children in kindergarten, students, and managers. The speed and hurry are the cause why fear and anxiety is present in every profession. This is why especially now, in our times, we need the ‘non-invasive help’ of auditory training.

Prof. Tomatis’ extensive experiments led him to a conclusion that to achieve positive results in therapy, music should have a relaxing effect on an individual. However, it has to keep the person dynamized. Amongst various types of music the one which fulfills these requirements best was music composed for an instrument, for example a violin. Prof. Tomatis stated that there are two types of sounds: charging and discharging. The former stimulate ones dynamics and the latter significantly lower the potential of every person. The professor also noticed that those who have difficulties in auditory analysis and integration of sounds tend to be more tired, disheartened and observe states of anxiety, whereas those who have the ability to analyze very subtle differences in sounds happen to be incredibly tonic, relaxed, just the opposite to the former. Research has proven that sound stimulates proper functioning of the body by delivering stimuli to the cerebral cortex. Sounds of high frequency work prompting, while sounds of low frequency result in tiredness. Therefore, in the training the high frequency sounds are mainly used.

The instrument which utters the most of high harmonies is the violin. Moreover, the training improves auditory lateralization, i.e. it causes that the right ear becomes dominant. Thanks to this better control of voice parameters is possible as well as better fluency in speech, which facilitates communication with others. Also the improvement of listening and communication skills results in better physical and mental state, as well as higher self-confidence. The auditory training has an influence on the effectiveness of control of ones own emotions. Thanks to the therapy our body learns techniques of relaxation and of increasing vital forces.

Case review:

Each person had an individually designed auditory attention training program, obeying the brakes in the therapy according to the arrangements regarding the Tomatis’ method. The training can be continued for the following years until the expected results are achieved (the decision to continue the training is taken by the consultant). There is also a possibility of ‘opening ears’ to other foreign languages and their frequencies.

Irena’s case.

Female, age 33, suffering from frequent migraines, professionally active. She has difficulties with loose understanding of the English language – despite acquiring the essential rules of grammar, writing and pronunciation. She is not able to communicate in this language freely and is afraid of making mistakes while talking.

After 30 sessions:

During the first 3 days of session, Irena reported powerful ear pain. The pain subsided in the following days. During the sessions Irena observed fluency in expressing her thoughts in business relations. She began to understand the information given by English speaking television presenters. Not knowing all the words she understood the context. It was a loose reception of information – she did not focus her attention on it and still understood everything.

After 45 sessions:

After 4 months there was not one headache. Improvement of concentration. Irena does not get tired at work as she used to.

Daniel’s case:

The boy is twelve years old and suffers form dypraxia. Has difficulties with understanding commands, reads mechanically, without understanding. Speaks poorly and slowly, incredibly easily falls into anger.

After 30 sessions:

Daniel is more talkative, balanced, asks more questions. It seems that he understands more. He is able to work using both of his hands at once.

After 40 sessions:

During a weekly therapy we observed: better concentration, improvement of reading, being more affective towards his father, more eager to talk and ask questions.

After 60 sessions:

During the break Daniels condition has significantly improved: progress at school, better social relations, more assertive, wants to gain his fathers attention…, but Daniel does not obey his mother.

After 90 sessions:

Daniel continues to improve, though attacks of anger towards various people still occur. In the end of the session the boy is more calm and compliant. After the session he is not ‘overactive’ anymore. During the break a lot better behavior occurred – he received three awards for achievements at school. Parents observe higher self-confidence, less anxiety. Daniel begins to do his homework of his own free will. The attacks of anger are shorter and less common.

Autistic children:

Despite the fact that the Tomatis’ method has not been devised as a therapy for autism treatment, it has been well tried in this field. In the case of around 60% of autistic children which have undergone this therapy positive results have been achieved. And although the auditory training does not cure autism, combined with other methods it can have a positive impact on the quality of the child’s life.

  • The aim of auditory training is to develop or recreate communication in the case when it has been weakened or lost. Prof. Tomatis has proven that especially in such situations the ear and its functions play an incredibly important part. The vestibule, which is a part of the middle ear, controls balance, coordination and muscle tension. All of the muscles are under its control, including the muscles of the eye ball. The vestibule also plays a crucial part in the process of sensory information processing. If there is proper integration of sensory information in the body, no problems occur. But in the case of the occurrence of abnormalities in this system, the child, feeling bombarded with loads of information at once, is trying to defend itself from being overburdened. It cuts off from his or her surrounding which also strengthens his feeling of isolation.

  • Many autistic children suffer from being oversensitive to sounds. This oversensitivity has an impact not only on the hearing organ. Both skin and bones also transmit sounds. Most of the people have a mechanism which protects them from a sound ‘attack’ from outside. Prof. Tomatis’ method helps reduce the children’s oversensitivity to sound. This process takes place in stages. The anxiety caused by some sounds is lowered. In the same time the defense from touch is weaker and there is better eye contact. An improvement of some of the motor functions can be observed. The parents note some changes in the child’s habits connected with eating and sleep. Some of the children fall asleep easier and their sleep is deeper and longer.

The reduction of oversensitivity to sounds

People with autism often show oversensitive reactions to different sensor stimuli. Signs of oversensitivity to sound are, for example: covering ones ears, outbursts of bad moods or persistent repeating some words or phrases. The sounds received by the body do not undergo any selection or filtration. This means that the sounds which are ‘in the background’, and which are in a way ‘unnecessary’ are not being eliminated. A properly developed auditory attention in most cases enables the filtration of sounds and reduction of their intensity, whereas most of people who suffer from autism are bombarded by auditory stimuli which they are not able to filter and select.

One of the aims of auditory training is the stabilization of the functions of the vestibule of the middle ear and making its sensor integration easier. It is the first step to rebuild communication skills. The ears vestibule has also an impact on speech. Children who do not speak, thanks to the stimulation of the vestibule often begin to produce sounds. Professor Tomatis noticed that one can produce sounds only if he or she hears them properly. It is the ear that controls speech – analyzing all its parameters: speed, fluency, proper pronunciation. For this it is necessary to involve the sound coming from the outside (other speakers) as well as sound coming form oneself (so called ‘self-listening’). Autistic children exclude either the sounds coming from the outside or the ones coming from themselves mainly to avoid being ‘bombarded’ by sounds. The Tomatis’ program helps children develop the ability of ‘self-listening’ in order to improve communication skills. To achieve this, vocal exercises are being held: children speak to the microphone and they have the possibility to immediately hear their own vice and master its control. The vocal exercises are especially difficult for the children in the beginning. They are often afraid of their own voice. But for some children this is an incredible experience. Sometimes it is the first time they can listen to themselves in a completely new way. Providing the children with the ability of controlled production of sounds we give them the possibility to develop themselves. We know that: ‘finding ones own voice is finding ones own self’.

In the beginning these are minor changes and there are always better and worse days and moments. But the tendency of improvement can especially be seen in a child from the perspective of a month or two. One has to bear in mind that the nervous system requires time to integrate, recognize and introduce perceptional and behavioral changes. During the therapy the child begins to express its emotions with more feeling. It can become more demanding with regard to its surrounding; it can also start to spontaneously initiate contact by sitting on the parents lap or accepting cuddling and hugging. Speech develops in various ways. Children who did not speak are becoming more willing to produce sounds, for example, by increasing vocalization which can develop into a type of mumbling. In case of children who could speak, one can notice improvement in the clarity of the messages, building longer sentences and better word choice. Also the understanding of speech improves. The concentration spam as well as focus on suggested task becomes longer. Thanks to gradual development of the need of communication and the growth of skills in this field, the children’s functioning in a group also improves. Instead of avoiding contact they begin to seek the attention of others and moments of playing alone become more and more rare. In the case of autistic children who do not speak at all, the language perception abilities improve. The children try to experiment with their own voice. In the case of children whose language skills are more developed, the expressive function of language improves. The sentences become longer, the vocabulary extends, and words are more adequate to thoughts. Instead of referring to themselves in the third person singular ‘he’ or ‘she’, the pronouns ‘I’ and ‘you’ are becoming more often used. The overall control of the language improves along with the will to communicate with the surrounding world.

According to Prof. Tomatis, the primary function of the ear is not hearing, but listening. He clearly diversifies these two phenomena. Hearing is by nature a passive activity, whilst listening has an active character, i.e. it requires involvement, consciousness, and will. Therefore one should not be surprised that the so called ‘absolute pitch’ does not guarantee good listening skills. According to school audiologists a vast number of children of good hearing have difficulties with attention and focus – these problems result from auditory attention disorders. Listening difficulties are the reason why these children suffer from concentration malfunctions and reading difficulties.

The listening skills consist of both the ability to acquire information and their proper filtration. Efficient processing of sensory data eliminates redundant stimuli, which enables concentration free of the feeling of information pressure.

Information which undergoes such filtration can be processed or filed into meaningful units. However, if this process is distorted and problems with listening appear, it may result in learning difficulties, problems with communication and social behavior disorders.

The aims of the ‘auditory attention training’ in the form devised by Prof. Tomatis is to exercise and improve listening skills in an effective and organized way. These exercises stimulate the central nervous system and, in particular, those cerebral cortex centers which are responsible for efficient functioning of the human body. Improving auditory attention leads to higher brain reception productivity and better perception of external stimuli (Paul Madaule, L.P. and Valerie Dejean, O.T., "The Listening Function").

Can you believe that we have all been born polyglots? It has been proven by research carried out in audio-psycho-phonological institutes’ around the world. It is really hard to believe when one recalls all the fruitless hours spent on English, German or French classes at school. One has to admit that ‘I am absolutely dull’ was the only conclusion that came to his or her mind. So much was said about the linguistic capabilities or their lack. And… it is not true!

Those who have difficulties with mastering foreign languages are not dull, they simply do not listen properly, in fact they listen, but they do not hear. Just like one can look but not see – one can listen having his or her ear ‘closed’. This is not the right track.

The secret of being a polyglot is in ‘listening raptly’ and it is considered a skill everyone can learn. If one does, his or her ability to use a given language automatically grows.

You must have noticed that English language used by a Spanish or French speaker does not sound ‘English’ but did you even think that it is different frequencies of these languages that are responsible for this phenomena (in English there are many high tones between 2000 and 12000 Hz, whereas French, for example, mainly operates in the band between 1000 and 2000 Hz.)

Our ears are best adjusted to the frequency of our mother tongue which we have mastered in our childhood and which we use in our everyday life.

Not being able to hear foreign sounds we cannot pronounce them properly. What is even worse: it is difficult for us to remember them. Research on this topic confirm the rightness of the theory that to hear well the ear needs to analyze properly, therefore, it needs to be opened to the frequencies which it could not receive before.

According to a French scholar (neurologist, otolaryngologist and phoniatrist) Prof. Alfred Tomatis, everyone can learn to listen actively. As a result of his works, which he had conducted for over 45 years, he devised a thorough method of ear training based on listening to sounds through a device called the ‘electronic ear’. It is a perfect model of the human ear that exercises the natural ear so that it can function without interference. The ear is, in a way, programmed to the melody of the language we want to learn, taking into account the differences between the lengths of syllables in various languages and the time frames within which they need to be produced. What is interesting is that pronouncing an American syllable usually takes around 75 milliseconds, a lot longer than a French one which takes only 50 milliseconds. Therefore, an American learning French needs to master pronouncing syllables a lot faster than he is used to. According to Prof. Tomatis, ‘this means that the ears need to react faster which can be achieved through exercising them’.

Beginning the training before starting to learn a foreign language significantly shortens the time required to learn it. When the ears are exercised one can hear the language properly and, therefore, he or she will be able to remember words easily and pronounce them properly.

The effects of Prof. Tomatis’ method, called in Poland the SAPL method (audio-psycho-linguistic simulation) prove that we have inborn abilities to become polyglots. All we need to do is to stimulate our ears to listen actively which significantly shortens the foreign language learning process, enables acquiring a better accent and improving pronunciation!

Therefore, difficulties in speaking another language may occur in the case of every language which has a different range of waveband then the one of our mother language.

Below one may find a chart showing the frequencies characteristic for given languages:
